Sometimes, you need to do a little more than a swirl and swish with the Thermomix brush and some detergent to clean your Thermomix bowl and lid. Especially if you have a TM6 and do a lot of high heat cooking of curries and other delicious dishes!
I need to clean one of my bowls today, so I thought I’d collate a few of the methods and ideas that are floating around on the internet to have them all in one place.
First of all, remember to use the Preclean Mode on the TM6 after any doughs, batters or after cooking.
Secondly, try the dishwasher. The bowl, blades and bowl base all go into the dishwasher.
You really only need a few things to clean your Thermomix bowl – White Vinegar, Bi-Carb Soda (Baking Soda, not Baking Powder), Water and some brushes and scrubbies.
- 1. Making garlic paste and finding that odour won’t go away?
Add 2 Tbsp bi-carb soda, 250g white vinegar and 1 Litre water to the bowl. It will bubble up, that’s good!
Set 10 minutes/Varoma/speed 3
- 2. Is it the lid that is stinky?
Make a thick paste of bi-carb soda and water. Spread over the lid and leave for up to 15 minutes. Rinse. Or, pop out in the sun for a few hours.
- 3. Made a high heat dish and there are dark marks on the base? Oops!
I recommend a product called Gumption available at supermarkets in Australia.
The other option is to make a paste of bi-carb soda and water and spread it on to the base of the bowl. Leave for 10 minutes and scrub away.
The Scrubbies from the Mix Shop are the best for this.
- 4. Made custard or something gooey and blades need a good clean? If you have egg shells from your custard, you’re right to go!
Add water to cover the blades and pop in those egg shells. Press Turbo up to 20 times. Rinse the bowl and wipe clean. If you need to get right in between the blades, there is a great little mini brush at the Mix Shop.
- 5. Like mine above, does it just need a bit of a scrub?
Sprinkle bi-carb soda onto a damp bowl. Use a Scrubbie and gently rub away to clean and shine. Rinse well.
- 6. Did you cook something on high heat way too long? Are there burnt or stuck on foods on the base?
Time for an egg shell and lemon wash.
- Add some egg shells and lemon skins or halved lemons to the bowl.
- Chop 10 sec/speed 8. Scrape down mixer bowl.
- Add enough water to cover the blades.
- Set 30 mins/50c/speed 1/MC on. Tip out and rinse well.
- If still there, try No. 1 cleaning tip.
- 7. Want a cool way to dry the bowl?
Pop a tea towel into the bowl and set on 2 mins/Reverse/15 seconds!
- 8. And, a new one I’ve added – stuff stuck in the arms of the TM5 or TM6?
Use a chopstick with some damp paper towel or a damp cloth on the tip to get into the arms. Alternatively, use the little brush from the Mix Shop to rub any dried food off the inside of the arms. A toothbrush works too!
And, a final tip – bi-carb soda breaks down proteins. It’s used to soften meat and chicken in Chinese cuisine. So, if it’s a protein that has glued itself to the base of the bowl – eg. egg white, then sprinkle bi-carb soda onto the damp base and leave for an hour or so to allow it to break down and soften the stuck on protein.
